When stepping forth to do anything, especially when it comes to creative endeavors, probably one of the most important ideals to keep in mind is maintaining as much of one's individuality as possible. Such is true because in a world of vast influence, heterogeneity oftentimes gets overlooked by homogeneity due to what people are most familiar with. However to be bold and to be daring not much, if anything is ever accomplished by duplication.
So to set his own trend(s) and create his own style(s), Marcos Guareño of New York, steps outside the box with the development of a clothing line based on what people know him best for--himself. As president and designer of Magu Clothing, Marcos champions a movement toward a more heterogeneous and individualized expression through the arts.
Take some time and get to know him a little better.
[As Told To Why Blue Matters]
So tell me a little bit about yourself:
Magu Clothing: My name is Marcos Guareño, I am 28 years old. I'm a graphic and fashion designer, and an entrepreneur. Born and raised in NY, I learned that fashion is an ever-changing industry whose ideas are breath-taking 1 minute, but are easily forgotten the next. As president of Magu Clothing, I am determined to provide the fashion industry with the style that they’ve been missing. Magu Clothing offers a vision of what class and quality should be.
What would you consider your style of clothing?
Magu Clothing: My style of clothing would be a cross between retro, urban, and casual. I started out with more of an urban look and as time went on, I added some retro flair to the line. Now I am actually adding some casual and classy pieces to the collection.
What do you like most about being a fashion designer?
Magu Clothing: What I like most would have to be the fact that I am able to express my creativity through clothing that defines my uniqueness. I like to stand out from crowd and be different.
How did you develop Magu Clothing?
Magu Clothing: The line originated from the first two letters of my first and last name. After quite some time trying to come up with a name for the line, I came across Magu while walking with a friend. We had brainstormed a few names but none seemed to work. Playing around with the letters of my name, I landed on my initials Ma Gu, and since that day the name stood.
What inspires and motivates you?
Magu Clothing: There are a few things that inspire me and motivate me to continue to create stunning designs. I would have to say my family for one. They keep me grounded, focused and on the right path. They always give me their honest opinion, whether good or bad. Music is also very inspirational for me. It puts me in a zone that allows me to escape and enter my creative world where I can come up with ideas to showcase to the public. Success has to be one of my biggest motivators; it calls me and does not allow me to give up. My first collection was a success as I was able to sell over 400 pcs in stores, in less than 2 months. Prior to putting them in stores, I would have to say I sold a bit over 2oo pcs from my home. Being given a taste of success gave me the green light to continue and persevere until Magu becomes a global name in the fashion industry.
How long have you been involved in fashion?
Magu Clothing: I've been involved in fashion all my life. Growing up, I was into all the latest trends and took the time to research what would be coming out or be in style in the near future. I freelanced for two clothing companies before I decided to begin my own line. I designed for their lines and created various materials for them. I learned a lot from both companies- the production and marketing of clothes, which in turn allowed me to have the courage and motivation to start my own. I needed to be able to put out a product that would be different and catch people's interest.
What type of impact would you like to make with Magu Clothing?
Magu Clothing: Not every style of clothing is for everyone, and yet, my focus is for Magu Clothing to be something that all senses of styles can relate to. I want to be able to boost the community and the individual’s sense of style, whether it be someone older with a more casual look or someone younger with a retro look. I want people to feel good in my line, comfortable and confident but at the same time, be stylish. I want Magu Clothing to be a conversation starter, an ice breaker, something to bring different people together because they will have one thing in common, they value and support Magu Clothing. I want to be able to allow people to express their uniqueness and sense of style through Magu Clothing.
What do you do outside of fashion design?
Magu Clothing: I also own a graphic design company. The ability to use art as a means to express myself is something I love to do.
