WBM Features: Dj SoSt.Cyr

If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would
not bother trying to say it in music.
-Gustav Mahler

Without fail, we're all here to do something on this Earth. And while we're here, much if not all of how we decide to make such a contribution depends on the individual. That contribution oftentimes isn't easy, the timing couldn't necessarily happen when we like, nor is it recognized immediately on surface. However, what's most rewarding is when we as individuals choose to make one such contribution or many contributions for that matter to make a difference in the world.

Take the upcoming Dj and aspiring conductor, Dj So St. Cyr for example. With beginnings, at the parties of his friends, So St. Cyr takes his craft seriously, works hard, and is always looking to improve. As matter of fact, if you're in Central New Jersey, you may even catch him, holding down a party or two. He's definitely someone on the come up and one to watch out for.

[As Told To Why Blue Matters]

Who is DJ So St.Cyr?

So St. Cyr: I am me. Just a person who is trying to use the gifts that God has seen fit to bless me with.

Where are you based out of?

So St. Cyr: I am from St.Croix the Unites States Virgin Islands.

What does music mean to you?

So St. Cyr: Music is life essentially. It is the only force on this earth that can touch your soul and you are powerless to stop it. We as beat makers, artists, dj’s, and dancers, are, in essence, the vessel of the music.

Has that meaning changed over the years?

So St. Cyr: The only thing that has changed is my approach. Over time, I have made a conscious effort to make sure that I stay open to the growing landscape of music and sound.

When did you know music was something you wanted to pursue?

So St. Cyr: I would say after watching my parents. My dad was a professional musician all the days of his life in addition to his regular job as an architect. My mother is a dancer, choreographer, and an aerobics instructor. Saying all that to say, music was a part of my life from an early age.

How'd you get involved in Dj'ing?

So St. Cyr: I started by doing music at my friends’ parties and it has grown tremendously from there.

What are you working on currently?

So St. Cyr: I’m working on the rudiments of djing. Beat juggling and the many assortments of scratches and cuts and things of that nature.

Outside of music what are some of your interests?

So St. Cyr: I love movies and I love reading and video games.

What keeps you motivated?

So St. Cyr: My mom and my family are my driving force I would say.

Who are your influences?

So St. Cyr: Grand Wizard Theodore, J-rocc and the beat junkies, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Wes Will, Grandmaster Flash, Jam Master Jay

Biggest accomplishment?

So St. Cyr: Dj’ing my first wedding last summer.

What's one thing about DJ So St.Cyr that many probably don't know?

So St. Cyr: I want to be a conductor one day.

What can we expect from you in 2010?

So St. Cyr: More hard work.

Have any advice for those in pursuit of their musical endeavors?

So St. Cyr: Hard work, no excuses. Excuses are the tools of a week mind, and are bricks in the house of Failure, and God Bless.
