WBM Features: D-Cannon

Ambition is enthusiasm with a purpose.
-Frank Tyger

Get to know D-Cannon, an up and coming artist coming out of Washington DC. Known for his aggressive and unique flow along with his wordplay, he catches the attention of listeners with ease. Embraced by many, D-Cannon continues his independent grind, and with his ability to make music the way he does. It's only a matter of time before he's at the top.

[As told to WBM]

Introduce yourself to the people who already dont know who you are
Lets start off with letting us get to know the real you.

D-Cannon: Well, I go by the name of D-Cannon. I'm a 20 year-old multi-talented musician, engineer and CEO from Washington DC.

So what project are you working on now? what are your goals for 2010?

D-Cannon: I'm working on several projects right now. I'm in the studio recording my first album along with my new mixtape "Hurricane Season," as well as mixtapes from my artists on my label. This year I'm just grindin' heavy. My goal is just to be successful at whatever I do. I want to expand my family of supporters and get more people familiar with D-Cannon.

So whats your birth name? What's the difference between the real you and your stage persona?

D-Cannon: I was born Darrick Palmer but I became D-Cannon as soon as I learned who I was, ha ha ha. I really wouldn't say I have a stage persona because, I'm the same person on and off stage. There really isn't a difference between Darrick and D-Cannon. Just 100% me.

How long have you been in the game?

D-Cannon: I started early. I've been doing music since I was 7. I'll be 21 this year so it's going on 14 years of work.

What's your greatest accomplishment so far in life?

D-Cannon: I would have to say my greatest accomplishment would be staying true to myself, sticking to my dreams and chasing them. I've made myself known worldwide, just through the internet. My music is being played in places I've never been to! That's a very big accomplishment.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

D-Cannon: As you probably already noticed, I'm a big fan of music. I started writing my own songs at age 7 and producing at 12 or 13. I started my own label New Era Entertainment with my brother a few years back and I've been very successful and consistent on the underground music scene. I got 5 mixtapes circulating on the internet right now and over 1.4 million plays on MySpace.

Interest(s)?

D-Cannon: I'm usually interested in whatever involves makin' money...Oh yeah, I like sports and women too, ha ha.

What's your ultimate goal in life?

D-Cannon: My ultimate goal in life is to be successful. I couldn't ask for anything more. I aim to be the best in what ever I do and success would let me know that I am the best.

What do you like most about being in the business?

D-Cannon: The business, ha ha. I would probably say I enjoy performing and interacting with my fans the most. They build you up and give you a major boost of self-confidence, a feel of being appreciated. That's what I like the most.

What's the thought process behind your works?

D-Cannon: Everything is me. I'm very creative and strong at arranging songs. I just play the track a couple times, think of a hook, and the rest is history.

...from personal experience?

I would say in every one of my songs whatever I talk about is 90% personal experience. That's why there's really not a difference between Darrick and D-Cannon.

...mere creativity?

D-Cannon: Creativity plays major part in making a "catchy" record of course but, I've noticed that more people can relate to what's real. That benefits me a lot because I lived through and experienced some things that people wanna hear and can relate to.

What inspires and motivates you?

D-Cannon: I'm inspired by music itself. All genres of music motivates me to keep going strong.I do it for the love of music.

How has life changed for you since being you started ?

D-Cannon: I wouldn't really say life has changed much. A few more doors have been opened up for me and I have a little more fame in my city but, life's still the same for me.

What would you be doing now, if you never started doing music?

D-Cannon: Honestly, I don't know. There's a lot of things I'm good at doing that I enjoy doing in my spare time but, I have a strong drive and passion for music. So without my music career I probably would be lost.

What are you listening to in your ipod these days?

D-Cannon: I'm a big Lil' Wayne fan.I listen to a lot of Weezy and Young Money. I listen to Jeezy, Gucci, T.I, Rocko, Plies and a couple other people too. I mostly play a lot of myself and my artist though.

...Why?

D-Cannon: Those are the people I relate to. Whether it's lyrical content, lifestyle or just the beats. I can relate to those artists on a day to day basis in some type of way.

What has been your favorite job you've done so far?

D-Cannon: I haven't had one that I can remember,ha ha. That's crazy!

Does any negativity from the media ever affect you in anyway?

D-Cannon: Nah, I learned how to pick and choose my battles so I know that everything doesn't deserve my attention. I know how to brush things off and keep moving forward.

Any advice for those looking to pursue their dreams?

D-Cannon: My advice to anybody with a dream is just to never give up hope and never let anyone tell you that achieving your goals and impossible. God has everything planned out for us, we just gotta have faith.

What do you want to be remembered by?

D-Cannon: My ambition and determination. I have a good heart and I'm a very driven person. That's something that I always want people to remember about me.

Anything else you would like the world to know about you?

D-Cannon: I'm on my way to the top so look out for me, ha ha!
