Fallen Hero

In Memory of our Fallen Hero

Keith “GURU” Elam

Rest In Peace!

7.17.1966 – 4.19.2010

Why Blue Matters would like to take the time to say a warm and sincere Rest In Peace to Keith “Guru” Elam. Hip-hop has lost a true cultural leader and visionary and indeed a pioneer. The culture will truly miss you !

Guru passed away yesterday after a yearlong battle with cancer. According to sources close to Guru, he suffered in silence and dignity always thinking of his friends, family and fans. Since the onset of illness, Guru tried to live a “normal” life as an influential musician, father, family man, and Hip-hop cultural icon. Always keeping a positive outlook and encouraging those around him, Guru continued to prove his iconic status a leader in the Hip-hop industry.

Guru’s rise to fame came in the 80’s as front man for the group GangStarr. The group produced such memorable hits as “Jazzmatazz” volume 1,2,3 and 4, “Words I Manifest", “Mass Appeal” and “Jazz Thing” from the “Mo Betta Blues” sound track. Known as one of the top lyricists in hip-hop of all time, Guru worked with the some of the greatest artists in the music industry on several projects, proving his musical skill and critically acclaimed style will leave a big lyrical hole in the fabric of Hip-hop to be sure. Guru has a non-profit organization called “Each One Counts” that is dedicated to helping and providing resources for abused and disadvantaged children around the world. Please visit eachonecounts.org for more information and how you can help.

Guru, a TRUE HIP-HOP LEGEND!

Rest in Peace!!!
